
Christmas Day falls on the 25th of December every year and is supposed to be an annual holiday throughout the world. This day is celebrated as the birth of Christ, who was supposed to be the son of God. Today Christmas is celebrated not only by Christians but also by Non-Christians. Though Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December by most of the Christian Community, some orthodox churches celebrate Christmas on January 7th. According to them, the birth of Jesus Christ fulfills the prophecy in the Old Testament that a Messiah or Savior will come to the world.
According to legends, an angel had told Mary that the Holy Spirit had caused her to have a child. Then she and her husband Joseph left their home in Nazareth to go to Joseph’s ancestral house in Bethlehem. When they could not find any room in the inns, they took shelter in a stable. This was where Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus. Many gifts were given and wise men came to pay homage to Jesus Christ. It is believed that Jesus Christ was the messiah sent by God to lead the Jewish people.
For Christians the month of December and January is supposed to be a celebration time on account of Christmas and New Year. It is also celebrated as a winter festival. There are many preparations done before the eve of Christmas. People decorate their houses and churches with Christmas trees, balloons, festoons, flowers, toys, lights and lamps. Songs and prayers are sung by family members and guests at night and early morning. Grand feasts are conducted in houses and churches. Gifts are exchanged among family members and friends. Some gifts are attributed to Santa Claus. Everywhere the legend of Santa Claus is maintained. More than one billion cards are given to family and friends as well as many Christmas trees are also sold during Christmas Eve.
In every part of the world, streets are adorned and there are whole night events in restaurants and clubs. There is lot of partying and feasting during this period. Many buy small Christmas trees and decorate them with lights. There is lot of enthusiasm amongst the people from all communities. You can see card board replicas of Santa Claus everywhere which creates a festive spirit. There are people who dress up as Santa Claus and hand out gifts to small kids.
